NBA playoffs scores, takeaways: Wolves hold off Nuggets to take Game 1 of Western Conference second round

The 2024 NBA postseason rolls into the second round on Saturday. The reigning champion Denver Nuggets hosted the Minnesota Timberwolves in a much-anticipated matchup of the familiar foes in the Western Conference semifinals. A year ago, Denver needed just five games to dispatch Minnesota in the first round of the playoffs, however, this time it was the Timberwolves coming out on top in Game 1. 

In order to get here, the No. 3-seed Wolves pulled off an impressive sweep of the No. 6-seed Suns in the first round, while the No. 2-seed Nuggets ousted the No. 7-seed Lakers in five games to advance. Anthony Edwards has become the Wolves' go-to scoring option as he's averaged 31 points, eight rebounds and six assists in the 2024 playoffs. Here are the biggest takeaways from Minnesota's Game 1 upset:

Is Anthony Edwards going to be the best player in this series?

Nikola Jokic is the best player in the world. It's one of those statements that we tend to treat as fact throughout a season without real re-examination. He's going to win MVP. He's the reigning Finals MVP. He's in the middle of a historically dominant run. So it stands to reason that he's the best player in the series, right?

Well, Anthony Edwards had something to say about that on Saturday. His 43 points were a new career playoff-high. He and Kobe Bryant are now the only two players age 22 or younger to score 40 in back-to-back playoff games. Edwards defended Jamal Murray for a decent amount of his scoreless first half. When Minnesota needed big buckets to ice things in the fourth quarter, it was Edwards contorting his body and nailing jumper after jumper against every layer of help-defense Denver threw his way.

None of this is to suggest Jokic played poorly. He didn't, and remember, he's facing a No. 1 defense and the presumptive Defensive Player of the Year. You can't exactly criticize 32 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Jokic was more or less his usual self.

But Edwards has risen to another level. He's now scored 35 or more three times in a row... all on the road. He didn't just beat Jokic, he did so under Jokic's favored conditions. The Nuggets trailed the Los Angeles Lakers at halftime of all five of their first-round games and in the fourth quarter of three of their wins. It didn't matter because Denver, for the past two seasons, has executed flawlessly on both ends of the court in clutch situations.

The fourth quarter belonged to Edwards on Saturday. If he can make contested shots at the same rate that Jokic creates easy ones, this series is going to come down to the defenses, and Minnesota's has a real advantage on that front. Denver's path to a victory in this series, especially after losing home-court advantage, starts with Jokic being the best player in the world. He wasn't on Saturday. He wasn't even the best player on the court. He was his usual self. Meanwhile, Edwards is evolving right before our eyes.

Which Murray is Denver getting?

Lost in the hoopla of Murray's two game-winners against the Lakers was the fact that he shot below 40% from the field on all of his other shots. He is very clearly physically compromised right now with a calf injury. Reports indicated that he struggled through practice this week as Denver prepared for Minnesota. He proceeded to go scoreless in the first half before stepping up to score 17 in the second.

The Timberwolves lightened up a bit on Murray defensively in the second half. After Edwards and Jaden McDaniels spent the entire first half attached to his hip, Minnesota grew a bit more comfortable conceding switches and letting him walk into jumpers. He got into a bit of a rhythm and looked a bit more like the Jamal Murray we know in those last two quarters.

But Edwards and McDaniels aren't going anywhere, and neither is Nickeil Alexander-Walker. Edwards is especially frustrating because he and Mike Conley made a point of running guard-guard pick-and-rolls in this game specifically to force Murray to play on-ball defense with that injured calf. The Timberwolves aren't the Lakers. They have all of the tools that they need to frustrate a hobbled Murray, and if Murray can't be the dominant scorer he was during last year's title run, or even the late-game finisher that he was against the Lakers, Denver is going to lose this series.

Micah Nori erases all doubts

How critical is a coaching injury, really? We don't know because it's not something we frequently deal with. Chris Finch was on the bench. He was obviously involved in the game-planning process. He was available to the team. But Micah Nori was nominally the acting coach. He was the one standing up, communicating with players and running huddles. It's unclear who was making the final decisions on substitutions, timeouts and challenges, and that sort of uncertainty means quite a bit in a game of this magnitude.

Whatever system Nori and Finch arranged went off without a hitch in Game 1. Minnesota navigated its victory comfortably. There weren't too many especially difficult game-management decisions when it came to timeouts or challenges, but one notably well-handled decision came on the lineup front in the fourth quarter. Karl-Anthony Towns spent most of the final frame on the bench in foul trouble, and in his place, Naz Reid scored 14 of his 16 points. With around three minutes remaining, the Timberwolves had to decide whether to stick with Reid or bring back Towns. They chose their All-Star, and he helped them seal the win.

In a perfect world, Finch would be handling all of his typical duties. He was a Coach of the Year finalist for a reason. But whatever Minnesota devised to make his life easier clearly worked. If Nori has to stand in his place all series, we now have reason to believe the Timberwolves will be just fine.

FINAL: Timberwolves 106, Nuggets 99

The Minnesota Timberwolves have officially drawn first blood on the defending champions. They beat the Denver Nuggets, 106-99. Anthony Edwards scored 43 points in the victory, a new playoff career-high, but he's now reached 35 points in his last three games, all of which came on the road. A clutch 14 points from Naz Reid in the fourth quarter helped Minnesota seal the victory, and now, the pressure is all on Denver. The Nuggets will have to win Game 2 just to even things up before we go to Minnesota, and at some point in the series, Denver will have to win a road game to win the series.

There's the dagger

That's 39 points for Anthony Edwards. His turnaround jumper puts the Timberwolves on top, 102-91 with less than two minutes to go. Barring something wild, Minnesota is going to take Game 1 of this series on the road. Now it's up to the Nuggets to respond, and FAST. If they go back to Minnesota down 2-0, this series might be over quickly.

Reggie Miller makes a very interesting point on the broadcast. Karl-Anthony Towns has been on the bench with five fouls for most of the fourth quarter. Naz Reid has thrived, scoring 14 points in the quarter. So what's the move here for Micah Nori, coaching in place of Chris Finch: do you leave in your Sixth Man of the Year to close a game he's swung, or do you go back to your star, who was so critical in getting you back into the game in the third quarter?

The Sixth Man of the Year struggled mightily in the first three quarters, but he has 11 here in the fourth, and the Timberwolves needed him badly with Karl-Anthony Towns on the bench with five fouls. His banked 3-pointer followed by an explosive put-back dunk gave Minnesota a five-point lead.

Anthony Edwards isn't just scoring. He's making impossible, contested jumpers over and over and over again. He's been the best player in a game that includes Nikola Jokic. Visually speaking, this feels like watching a young Dwyane Wade. We have six more games of this coming, but so far, the first punch in this series has been thrown by Edwards. Hey, remember in the third quarter when I explained why you don't concede the switch to Jamal Murray? Well, this is why. He has his rhythm now, and the moment he sees Karl-Anthony Towns on him on the perimeter, he goes into hunting mode. He just drilled a 3-pointer in Towns' face, got fouled, and sank the free-throw to boot. That's 15 points for Murray in the second half.

It's a one-score game through three quarters

What a back-and-forth affair we have here in Denver. Minnesota took an early 18-4 lead. Denver reclaimed control from there and led by four at the half. Now, Minnesota is up two after three quarters. Anthony Edwards leads all scorers with 31 through three quarters. Nikola Jokic has 22 points, seven assists and five rebounds. The stars have lived up to the hype. The defenses are as tough as advertised. We're headed towards a classic finish.

Controversial technical foul

Wow, in a five-point game, Anthony Edwards just picked up a technical foul for a stare. That's right... a stare. In a game this close, that point could actually affect the outcome. There is not a soul watching this game, save perhaps the Nuggets themselves, that wants to see that called.

Don't concede the switch to Murray!

The one thing the Lakers did really, really wrong against Jamal Murray was concede easy switches in mid-range. The issue with doing so is that you risk allowing him a rhythm. Murray goes from cold to hot faster than almost any guard in the NBA. If you let him walk into an easy jumper at the nail like the Timberwolves just did, you risk allowing him to get comfortable. You want to go over screens on Murray. Make him put that injured hamstring to work. The Timberwolves have done such a good job of that most of the night, but that last possession was their first real slip up.

It looks like the sleeping point guards are waking up

Both starting point guards in this game—Jamal Murray and Mike Conley—went scoreless in the first half. They have 11 points in the first half of the third quarter. Murray seems to have finally found a rhythm with Minnesota throwing its endless array of perimeter defenders at him. Conley is still playing conservatively, letting Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns create their looks. Both of their stars are going to need their point guards to create more offense, though. Edwards and Nikola Jokic have been the stars of the show, but they can't do this alone.

It was all Anthony Edwards in the first two frames. Karl-Anthony Towns opens the third quarter 4-of-4 from the field, and the Timberwolves have cut the Denver lead to two. Still, if Minnesota is winning this game, it is going to need to get at least one more player going. Their remaining starters have been limited to one field goal apiece.

So far, it's been a one-man show for Minnesota. Anthony Edwards has 25 points through 24 minutes. His teammates have combined for 15 more—with nine of them coming from Karl-Anthony Towns. Denver hasn't been all that balanced either. Jamal Murray has not scored a point yet, but Nikola Jokic and Michael Porter Jr. have combined for 28 to keep the Nuggets on top, 44-40.

Where is Minnesota's offense going to come from?

Anthony Edwards' incredible first-quarter run masked just how much trouble the Timberwolves have generating offense. They have 14 points since that early 18-4 run. Where are the Mike Conley pick-and-rolls? They need to settle down and run their offense. In this altitude and with this intensity, Anthony Edwards is not going to be able to carry the offense all night.

Watch Towns on the catch

Just a quick strategic note: With Nikola Jokic defending Rudy Gobert, the Nuggets are going to have a size disadvantage with whoever is guarding Karl-Anthony Towns, be that Aaron Gordon, Peyton Watson or Michael Porter Jr. Their approach in response has been a lot of aggressive post-fronting and trying to steal entry passes. That's a risky approach. Not only does it potentially give Towns advantageous position if he does get the catch, but it risks fouls as well. It's worked so far, but keep an eye on that—and how Minnesota tweaks its post entries in response.

The Jokic matchup

There's no "good" way to handle Nikola Jokic, but something we're seeing so far is that Rudy Gobert doesn't bother Nikola Jokic all that much in the post. The Timberwolves have tinkered with different looks, such as Karl-Anthony Towns on him with Gobert lurking as a helper, and they'll surely experiment more as the series goes. But as the Lakers found in the first round, you can't just stick a star defender on Jokic and assume it will work.

Edwards in, Jokic out

Just something to note here: Anthony Edwards returns to the game after less than three minutes of rest, but Nikola Jokic is still on the bench for Denver. That's one of the benefits to your best player being only 22. Edwards doesn't need quite as much rest as Jokic does, so the Timberwolves are going to get a bit of a minutes advantage in that respect.

Why did Michael Malone tweak his rotation?

Now, it's hard to complain here. The Nuggets are back in this game in large part because of how well their reserves, especially Reggie Jackson, have played. Still, it's worth wondering why neither Peyton Watson nor Christian Braun played in the first quarter after both played such important roles in the Laker series.

Denver storms all the way back

So much for Minnesota's 18-4 lead. Ever since then, the Nuggets have dominated. We've now reached the end of the first quarter, and the Nuggets are on top, 25-23. Now things get even more precarious for the Minnesota offense. Anthony Edwards will presumably take his first rest of the night, and their offense really struggles in those moments. The counterpoint, though, is that Nikola Jokic will also take his rest. Whose bench will control the next stretch? So far tonight, it's been Denver's.

What's up with Minnesota's reserves?

Man, this is new. Naz Reid won Sixth Man of the Year. Nickeil Alexander-Walker was one of the best bench players in the NBA this season. And they're playing against a lineup of mostly Nuggets bench players. But both of them are struggling to just hold the ball. It's an 11-0 run for Denver. The Timberwolves might need to get Mike Conley back in the game just to reorganize themselves.

You rarely see games take this tenor for Denver. Usually, their starters dominate and their bench gives up leads. Well, their starting lineup fell down 18-4 in this one. Ever since they brought in subs, Denver has gone on a 9-0 run. It's small-sample noise, but notable considering the pace most Nuggets games take.

Nuggets: 4

The Nuggets are coming off of a series against the Lakers in which they faced very little defensive pressure. Their perimeter players in particular are just offense-first players. But Denver's perimeter players have nowhere to hunt for offense right now. Jamal Murray hasn't made a shot yet, and as Michael Porter Jr. just learned, Rudy Gobert is nearly as lethal on the perimeter as he is near the rim.

Timberwolves go at Murray early

That last play before the commercial break was an indication of one of the ways Minnesota wants to attack Denver. Guard-guard pick-and-rolls are almost always about hunting a matchup, and the Timberwolves gave the one they're attacking away by having Mike Conley screen for Anthony Edwards there. The goal was to get Jamal Murray, hampered by an injury, onto Edwards. Edwards swiftly sank a 3 in his face. Expect the Timberwolves to hunt that matchup until Murray proves that he is healthy.

One of the earliest fouls you'll ever see

Well... not the start Minnesota was looking for! Karl-Anthony Towns just picked up a foul two seconds into the game, right after the opening tip. Towns has had trouble staying out of foul trouble throughout his postseason career, so this is exactly the sort of opening the Timberwolves wanted to avoid.

We just got an update from the broadcast: Chris Finch is in the building, and he will be involved, but assistant coach Micah Nori is coaching the game because of the torn patellar tendon Finch is dealing with. What exactly is the distinction? Well, Finch can still offer direction and be involved in timeouts, but Nori will be standing up, making those tight, in the moment decisions on things like timeouts and challenges.
